What is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps people process and integrate traumatic memories in a new, less distressing way. It involves:

  • Focusing on a distressing memory

  • Noticing associated thoughts, emotions, and body sensations

  • Engaging in bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements, but sometimes tapping or auditory tones)

The bilateral stimulation is believed to help the brain "reprocess" stuck or unprocessed memories, similar to what happens naturally during REM sleep.

Is trauma affecting your life?

Are you experiencing physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms related to a trauma or period of trauma? You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or emotional numbness. You may be experiencing tiredness, difficulty sleeping, or tension. You may be experiencing feelings of guilt or shame, avoidance, or mood swings. Trauma can be any event that significantly impacts your life, big or small. Whether you are experiencing one symptom or many, you deserve healing.

How I can help?

I chose to get trained in EMDR early in my therapy career because I personally experienced its benefits during my own healing journey. I truly believe it helps get to the root of the issue and can lead to profound healing. If you're curious about my experience with EMDR, you can check it out here. EMDR helps us focus on the memories that trigger trauma responses and works to reduce the emotional and physical sensations tied to them.

FAQs

  • Online EMDR works similarly to in-person sessions, with some modifications to accommodate the virtual format. You might follow a object on your screen, use self-administered bilateral stimulation like tapping your shoulders alternatively.

Many clients, and studies, find these adaptations just as effective as traditional in-person methods.

Virtual EMDR offers several advantages, including flexible scheduling, resolution of transportation challenges, or feel more comfortable processing trauma in their own safe space.

  • The day of your EMDR session, wear comfortable clothing and plan for some downtime afterward, as processing can be emotionally intensive. Avoid scheduling stressful activities immediately before or after your appointment.

  • I offer in-person EMDR sessions in Goodyear, AZ which is close to Avondale, AZ and Tolleson, AZ.

Or virtually throughout AZ, OH, and CO.

  • At the beginning of session, we will discuss which target we will be working on and create our plan.

During the session, we will spend the majority of the time in the reprocessing stage doing bilateral stimulation to work through the memory.

At the end, we will spend a few minutes processing and using a calming skill to make sure you are regulated when you leave.
